dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.

when gilles peterson reacts to a house record, you know it is a very special house record. deep and soulfull, love it - was what the 6 music dj thought of these two. if that wasnt enough, trickski described best things in life are free as one hell of a bomb. add in support from jimmy edgar, mark e, severino and dusky and this is looking like one of glasgow undergrounds most successful records to date. love games is the a bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing. what starts off as hooky percussive groove slowly morphs into a full vocal classic with swirling chords and a killer synth hook. severino dropped it at fabric recently and took the roof off the place. best things in life are free is a darker affair – all wandering acid lines and moody, emotional strings - but as trickski proved when they played it at watergate, just as effective.

adam beyers original track starts with a heavy bass line that is a sure-fire, grooved out killer. the infectious vocal hook and melody line supplies the extra force to make this track one of the strongest releases on truesoul to this date. nic fanciullis take on take me away uses a rhythmic melodic synth-line before bringing in the vocal to maximum effect. alans darker approach gives this release an extra dimension, using deep-pounding toms to create a cool, stripped back vibe with warm stabs and hats to match.

next up on crosstown rebels clandestine off-shoot label rebellion is the dexterous and versatile producer behind latest alias, siopis. adorning the master plan ep with a far murkier quality than previous works as silversurfer, the siopis sound is destined for the darker recesses of the club.

magic feet introduce three new artists on their first label sampler, as well as a remix from label owner craig bratley. the tracks cover various genres, taking their inspiration from house, italo, new beat and disco. first up is paresse, an alias of swedish producer ivan bergren. *the night before you came* is a hypnotic, evolving slice of future disco. craig bratleys remix shows craig indulging in his obsession with the world of analogue synths and sees the track taking in a deeper and darker direction. craig has also had a hand in editing *lost era* by kepier on the flipside, a track with a direct lineage to the belgian new beat sound. to round off the ep, we have soul tension, an alias of tony beardsley, who also produces as dark strands. *suburban life* is a superb take on the slo-mo techno sound.
